Jasmine Cumberland, our guest speaker for Spring HR’ice’A last week, is a well-rounded HR professional and SFU Beedie alumna we can all look up to. During her time in SFU, Jasmine studied Human Resources, MIS, and Entrepreneurship, completed four co-op terms, two exchanges to Austria and China, and other extra-curricular activities with JDC West, Orientation, SFU BASS, and more. She now works with Target Canada as the Senior Campus Recruiter.
Jasmine shared her story and path to becoming who she is today, and definitely reminded our audience to always strive to BE MORE! She advised that for whatever extra curricular activity or part time job that we engage in, we should make sure that it is helping us build skills that we wish to acquire. Students also got to experience some of the opportunities available at Target Canada, as Jasmine kindly provided us with sample job descriptions of entry-level roles for insight, as well as what kind she looks for in a candidate as someone in HR.
When asked by an audience member whether she found her CHRP designation to be useful and competitive, she mentioned that the designation was becoming more and more popular and it could be used to one’s advantage in a highly competitive situation. To learn more about the designation, make sure to RSVP to attend our BC HRMA/CHRP info session next week on Feb 5th.
Of course our icebreaker wouldn’t have been complete without fun games, delicious food, and also a presentation of events for the semester, such as our signature event, Spring Soirée which will take place at Delta Vancouver Suites on March 12th. We are looking for volunteer photographers, bloggers, logistics and attendee coordinators, and sponsorship coordinators for this event. Stay tuned for more details!
