Our Fall signature event, HR NOW, took place last Wednesday October 30th. We had the pleasure to invite speakers like Matt Brown from Credential Financial, Julie Wong from Bull, Housser & Tupper LLP, Patrick Doyle from Teck Resources Ltd., Agata Zasada from HootSuite, and Valerie Molloy from WorkSafe BC join us for an evening filled with learning and networking!
Matt Brown, our Keynote speaker, began the evening with an activity. He asked the audience to think about a time in their lives when they were most energized and then stated lesson number one – know what energizes you and search for it. He stated that “no one grows up knowing what they want to do HR.”
Brown indicated a variety of tips for students who were interested in starting a career in HR, such as getting as much exposure in different areas of HR, setting flexible career goals and being adaptable, and finding a great environment with great people and a great boss. He also recommended students to go global and interact with different cultures. But, going against conventional thoughts, he clarified that “you don’t have to leave home to go global”. His last lesson for students was to take their time as opportunities will come; he stated that “it’s lonely at the top” and there is a loss of “intellectual camaraderie”.
After Matt’s keynote presentation, we dived into a networking break where students were able to interact with each other and the speakers.
Please stay tuned for our recaps for Workshop A and B!
