Our Fall signature event, HR NOW, took place on October 30th. We had the pleasure to invite speakers like Matt Brown from Credential Financial, Julie Wong from Bull, Housser & Tupper LLP, Patrick Doyle from Teck Resources Ltd., Agata Zasada from HootSuite, and Valerie Molloy from WorkSafe BC join us for an evening filled with learning and networking! Read about part I of this recap series here!

Workshop A: Julie Wong and Patrick Doyle

Julie Wong and Patrick Doyle

We were happy welcome two SFU alumni to speak at our workshops. Thank you once again to the coordinators of SFU Beedie Career Management Centre for helping us reach out to them!

Julie Wong from Bull, Housser & Tupper LLP from Session 1 spoke about ‘Starting your HR Career‘. She began by talking about her own experiences – from being a SFU graduate to working at her current company. She recommended students to keep LinkedIn updated and to always take ownership and have a backup plan.

After Julie, Patrick Doyle from Teck Resources Ltd. began the Session 2, also by talking about his personal experiences in ‘A Typical Day in HR‘. He said that “like sand through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives” and advised students to go outside of their comfort zone and differentiate themselves.  He ended the session by explaining the difference between a generalist and specialist , the different topics that a specialist can focus upon, and positions related to HR in a company.

Attendees of this workshop were happy to get a broad perspective on the many streams and responsibilities of professionals in HR. Thank you to Julie and Patrick for being there!

Stay tuned for the last wrap-up, Part III of our #HRNOW recap, coming out later this week!
