#eventrecap – BC HRMA / CHRP Info Session

Posted on Posted in Uncategorized

On November 7th, HRSA teamed up with the British Columbia Human Resources Management Association (BC HRMA) to hold the semi-annual CHRP info session to connect students with representatives from the professional association.

Speakers included HRSA’s own External Relations Manager, Jennifer Gutzmann, who also happens to be the SFU Student Representative with BC HRMA, and Mable Lo, who is an HR Advisor with the RCMP and SFU’s Post-Secondary Liaison with BC HRMA.

The night started out with Mable sharing her own inspiring story of how she transferred into HR, and how volunteering with BC HRMA helped her along the way. She says that “everyone has their own path, and you don’t necessarily have to concentrate in HR to be in the HR Industry.” Jennifer also spoke about her experience with BC HRMA so far,  including her involvement in the Professional Mentoring Program, and the HR Café.

In between giving attendees  a broad overview of the professional association and designation, speakers discussed what resources and events are best suited to students including (but not limited to) the annual HR Café, Professional Mentoring Program, and monthly roundtable networking events such as the Career Advancement Network roundtables.

Presenters also outlined the steps to become a Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP), and upcoming dates to write the National Knowledge Exam (KNE).

Jennifer encouraged students in their final years to consider writing the NKE soon, when coursework and theory hasn’t been all forgotten. You don’t have to have your degree to write the exam! If you are considering doing this exam soon, please note that there are resources available including in-person and online prep courses, study groups, and online self-directed learning resources. More detail can be found here.
